Watch Metallica Perform Neil Diamond’s ‘Sweet Caroline’ Live

Metallica’s Robert Trujillo and Kirk Hammett delighted Boston sports fans Sunday night with a special “Sweet Caroline” sing-along during the band’s concert at Gillette Stadium.

For over two decades, Neil Diamond’s 1969 hit has been a staple at Boston’s Fenway Park, with fans enthusiastically joining in during the middle of the eighth inning at every Red Sox game.

During the concert, Trujillo joked about the song’s intensity, saying, “This song is really scary, super heavy and if you start moshing try not to injure yourself, because it’s such a scary song I’m already shaking.” Despite his humorous warning, the crowd joined in with gusto, chanting “Bum, bum, bum” and “So good! So good! So good!” at all the right moments.

Trujillo and Hammett often perform bass and guitar “doodles” at Metallica concerts, choosing songs connected to the city in which they are playing. Past performances have included Kansas’ “Carry On Wayward Son” in Kansas and Grand Funk’s “We’re an American Band” in Michigan.

Sunday’s concert at Gillette Stadium featured a 15-song setlist but faced an unexpected delay due to severe weather. The crowd had to be evacuated from the stadium before the show could start. Thankfully, the venue extended its curfew, allowing Metallica to deliver a full performance that concluded with “One” and “Enter Sandman.”

Next weekend, Metallica’s 72 Seasons tour will continue at Chicago’s Soldier Field. This tour is unique in that the band plays two completely different sets on two separate nights in each city. Their tour is set to wrap up with a four-show, two-weekend engagement in Mexico City this September.
