WCTH Costar’s New Hallmark Mystery Is Very ‘Scooby-Doo’

WCTH stars Pascale Hutton and Kavan Smith dive into a new Hallmark Mystery, Nelly Knows Mysteries: A Fatal Engagement, which brings a very Scooby Doo vibe, definitely not Hope Valley.

Pascale Hutton and Kavan Smith are beloved by Hearties, but their entry into the mystery genre will attract Sleuthers as well. Their new movie, Nelly Knows Mysteries: A Fatal Engagement, promises a wider audience.

They recently spoke to US Magazine about the new mystery movie. It’s a significant shift from their roles in Hope Valley, and the film has a notably “retro” aesthetic, inspired by director David Strasser. Pascale clarified that it wasn’t about going back in time.

He had this vision that he wanted a kind of vintage retro vibe… just hints of it though. Obviously, it takes place contemporarily… you see it specifically in the dialogue and in Nelly’s wardrobe.

Nelly’s wardrobe, in particular, evokes a Scooby Doo essence. “There’s an outfit that she [Nelly] wears at the end of the movie. It’s like, this green dress with a trench coat over top of it and the tall boots and it just is like Scooby Doo all over it. When I put it on, I was like, ‘I’m in an episode of Scooby Doo,’” Hutton shared.

In addition to the retro fashion, Pascale and Kavan’s characters reside in a quirky town. Kavan mentioned that the retro music and the soda shop contribute to the unique aesthetic dynamic.

In this Hallmark Mystery, Pascale plays advice columnist Nelly. She receives an anonymous letter from a woman claiming her boyfriend is cheating. Nelly identifies the handwriting as that of her childhood friend, Dahlia.

Nelly decides to investigate but finds the boyfriend dead, making Dahlia the primary suspect.

She teams up with Detective Mike (Smith), who recently arrived in town, to solve the murder mystery.
