Weekend in Des Moines: Drone Show, ‘Frozen Jr.’ & Linda Lindas Highlights

Thursday night: Comedian Jeffrey Baldinger headlines at the Des Moines Funny Bone at West Glen Town Center, 560 S. Prairie View Drive #100, West Des Moines, for a 7 p.m. show. The comedian from St. Paul, Minnesota, combines his goofy outlook on life with sharp wit and Midwestern charm. Tickets start at $20.

Friday night: Head to the Des Moines Community Playhouse, 831 42nd St., Des Moines, to see The Penguin Project: Disney’s “Frozen Jr.,” a twist on the tale of Princesses Elsa and Anna from “Frozen.” The Penguin Project includes a group of youths, ages 10-21, who perform a modified version of the musical. Artists with developmental disabilities including Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, visual impairment, hearing impairment, and other neurological disorders fill the roles in this production, joined on stage by peer mentors of the same age. Tickets start at $13 for this 7 p.m. show that runs through Sunday at 2 p.m.

Friday night: Performer Napoleon Douglas highlights the works of Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, and more during his “For Once in My Life: A Night of Stevie, Luther, & More” show at Noce, 1326 Walnut St., Des Moines. Douglas performs with The Dirty Lowdown, a funk band based in Des Moines. Limited tickets starting at $25 remain for the 7 p.m. show.

Friday night: Check out the all-woman punk rock band out of Los Angeles the Linda Lindas with Allegra Hernandez and Girls Rock DSM at Wooly’s, 504 E. Walnut St., Des Moines. The Linda Lindas went viral for their punk song “Racist, Sexist Boys,” performed during the COVID-era at the LA Public Library. Tickets for the 7 p.m. show start at $20.

Friday night: Look up in the sky. Adventureland is bringing what it calls “Iowa’s largest drone show” to the skies to celebrate the theme park’s 50th anniversary. Look for more than 300 drones to light up and create images of iconic park images starting at 9:10 p.m. Shows continue at the same time Saturday night, and is included in the price of admission.

Saturday morning: Romance lovers should head to Beaverdale Books, 2629 Beaver Ave., Des Moines, for a celebration of romance books from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Romance authors will stop by and customers receive free chocolates and a 10% discount on many romance novels.

Saturday night: Josh Hoyer, who appeared on “The Voice” in 2017, performs at Middlebrook Mercantile, 4125 Cumming Ave., Cumming, from 5 to 8 p.m. The blues singer out of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Pie Mates Pies are on the agenda for the night.

Saturday night: Metal band out of Boston Ice Nine Kills and Los Angeles-based rockers In This Moment return on tour together in the “Kiss of Death Part 2” tour that makes a stop at Vibrant Music Hall, 2938 Grand Prairie Pkwy., Waukee. Tickets for the 6:15 p.m. show start at $86.

Sunday afternoon: See inside six mid-century modern condos at 3660 Grand Ave., Des Moines, during a tour run by the Iowa Architectural Foundation. For $50, see inside the condos, learn more about the building, and cap the day off with a free drink ticket for one of two signature cocktails at Hello, Marjorie. The tours run from noon to 2 p.m. or 2 to 4 p.m., and a cocktail hour at Hello, Marjorie from 3 to 7 p.m. follows.
