‘We’re Starting a Long Journey’ [Exclusive Video Interview] – GoldDerby

Shōgun star Hiroyuki Sanada has two chances to win trophies at the 2024 Emmy awards. Nominated for Best Drama Actor for his role as Lord Toranaga, Sanada is also recognized as a producer of the series, which has garnered 25 nominations. In an exclusive video interview, Sanada admitted he couldn’t decide which nomination meant more. “It’s a big thing as an actor,” he said. “But this is also my first experience producing, so both nominations are amazing for me.”

Sanada mentioned that being involved in production made acting more manageable. “When in front of the camera, I felt ready,” he noted. “As a producer, I was part of the script, casting, and staffing. This involvement made me feel comfortable and confident as an actor.”

Throughout the season, Toranaga is portrayed as a master strategist. “He’s a great strategist, coordinator, and conductor of the country,” Sanada explained. He aimed to reveal Toranaga’s inner conflicts too. “He’s not always cool. He’s always crying inside. While playing him, it was like a roller coaster emotionally. I tried to show a poker face, but my emotions came through my eyes.”

The episode submitted for Emmy consideration, “The Abyss of Life,” highlights Toranaga’s emotional struggles. A poignant scene shows Toranaga’s trusted friend Hiromatsu, played by Tokuma Nishioka, committing ritual suicide. Sanada and Nishioka’s long friendship intensified the performance. “He was the best actor for that role, especially for me,” said Sanada. “After that scene, my mind was empty; it felt like I’d lost an old friend for real.” In the same episode, Toranaga reveals his emotions to Mariko, played by Anna Sawai. “That’s the first time his emotions came out,” Sanada explained. “These two scenes were crucial for me.”

Anticipating the continuation of the show, which is set for two more seasons, Sanada has a clear vision for his character. “The show’s title is ‘Shōgun,’ but I didn’t become a Shōgun in season one. I hope viewers will see Toranaga become Shōgun,” he expressed. “We’re about to embark on a long journey.”
