What Postpartum Really Looks Like
Ashanti and Nelly are officially parents. A representative confirmed to People on Wednesday, August 21, that the couple welcomed a baby boy.
Their newborn son, named Kareem Kenkaide Haynes, was born on July 18. “The proud and happy parents are so in love with KK!” the rep shared in a statement.
The announcement coincided with Ashanti’s Instagram post revealing her postpartum experience. She shared a mirror selfie showcasing her postpartum body. “Funny how life’s plans aren’t…always on time,” she wrote. “I’ve been waiting to be a mom for a long time now but nothing could prepare me for EVERYTHING motherhood brings!”
Ashanti expressed her pride in her body, saying, “This is what postpartum looks like. I’m so proud of my body for giving me my baby, baby, baby, baby, baby.”
The couple first announced their pregnancy in April, also revealing their engagement after rekindling their romance in 2023. They originally began dating in 2003 but broke up in 2013, reconnecting a decade later.
Nelly discussed their relationship in an interview with Love and Hip Hop’s Rasheeda and Kirk Frost last year. “I think we both were pretty much doing what we do, but sometimes being separate you understand one another more,” he said. “You be like, ‘Yo, let me see exactly what they see.’ You know, because we all can be defensive sometimes in our own relationships. We know we wrong, but we going to stand on it. But we all are a victim to that.”
Kareem is Ashanti’s first child and Nelly’s fifth. Nelly welcomed his daughter Chanelle in 1994 and son Cornell in 1999 with his ex-girlfriend Channetta Valentine. After his sister Jackie Donahue passed away from leukemia in March 2005, Nelly adopted her children, Shawn and Sydney Thomas.
