What We Know About Lyle & Erik’s Late Parents

The case of the Menendez brothers has come into the spotlight once again, 35 years after the tragic murders of their parents, José Enrique and Mary Louise ‘Kitty’ Menendez.

Netflix’s documentary, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez, has reignited interest in the case. It delves into the murders committed by Lyle and Erik Menendez, who killed their parents in their Beverly Hills home in 1989. At the time of their deaths, José and Kitty were in their 40s. The couple is now laid to rest at Princeton Cemetery in New Jersey, while their sons remain incarcerated.

The Menendez brothers gained notoriety after their case, with reports highlighting that they allegedly spent around $700,000 on their extravagant lifestyle while their parents were alive, as noted by Time Magazine. With the renewed focus on the case, many are eager to learn more about who José and Kitty Menendez were and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

When the murders occurred, Lyle was 21 years old while Erik was just 18. Their 1993 trial revealed that the brothers claimed to have suffered abuse at the hands of their parents throughout their childhood. They made serious accusations against José, alleging sexual abuse, and claimed that Kitty struggled with drug addiction and alcoholism. In 1996, both Lyle and Erik were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for their parents’ murders.

During a therapy session, Erik confessed to the killings to their psychologist, Dr. Jerome Oziel. This revelation was later passed on to Oziel’s mistress, Judalon Smyth, who alerted the authorities.

José Menendez was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1944 and immigrated to the United States in 1960. There, he met Kitty, who was born in Illinois. José achieved success in his career, holding positions at companies like Hertz and RCA Records, according to Today. Kitty and José got married in 1963, and while she initially worked as an elementary school teacher, she became a stay-at-home mother after starting their family.

Today, Lyle and Erik Menendez continue to serve their sentences at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility, located in San Diego County, California. The ongoing public interest in their case reflects a broader societal concern about family dynamics, abuse, and the complexities surrounding crime and punishment.

As discussions about the Menendez brothers continue, the case serves as a stark reminder of the tragic events that unfolded more than three decades ago. The details of the investigation and its implications on mental health and familial relationships are still being examined today.
