What’s “Escape from Germany” About and Is It Worth Watching?

If you’re in the mood for a story based on true events, Escape from Germany is one to check out this week. It arrives on DVD and Blu-ray on Friday, Sept. 6, and is already available on Digital.

This film is set just before the start of World War II, around the end of August 1939. It tells a harrowing tale that is often overlooked amid the many atrocities of the war. This is a story that deserves to be told, so don’t let it pass by unnoticed.

Escape from Germany is a faith-based movie, but don’t worry about any religious agenda being pushed. The focus is more on the escape of a group of men from a country that was radicalizing its people.

While there’s been considerable focus on the plight of the Jewish people during World War II, there were many others who suffered or were at risk. The Mormons were among those groups.

When the President of the German Mission learned of the Nazis’ arrival in Germany and the impending closure of the borders, he knew he had to get the American missionaries out. This mission was dangerous and wasn’t completed until three days before the invasion of Poland in September 1939.

Understandably, you might have some apprehension about faith-based movies. I have that same apprehension. However, this film presents a beautifully woven tale. It’s more than just about faith. The faith element is crucial, yes, but only to understand the risk these men faced.

The real focus here is on the period and the atrocities that came with it. It’s about the risks taken, the way people could come together for good, the way others would betray, and so much more.

It’s also essential to support independent movies. There are so few that can be made, especially with the quality that Escape from Germany exemplifies. These films shed light on lesser-known elements of history, and we need to preserve these stories.

Escape from Germany is now on Digital and will be available on DVD and Blu-ray on Friday, Sept. 6.
