When Can We Expect House of the Dragon Season 3?

In some great news, House of the Dragon Season 3 is officially happening. In some bad news, we have to wait for it.

The second season has come to an end. No, we will not get any more episodes of the series in August 2024. That’s it for at least the rest of this year. The question for many is whether we could get new episodes in 2025.

I’d say this is unlikely. We probably won’t get House of the Dragon Season 3 until 2026. Here’s a look at why.

This is one of those shows where it’s all about the quality. It took two years between the first and second seasons of House of the Dragon, and that was with an early renewal.

Many will want to blame the strike action in the summer of 2023, but this show wasn’t affected. The writing had been completed by the time the writers strike started, and the series wasn’t involved in the actors strike. House of the Dragon actors are under the UK Equity banner rather than the SAG-AFTRA banner, meaning they didn’t stop work.

So, filming and post-production happened as planned. It suggests that the series needed the two years to film.

With that in mind, we’re looking at two years for House of the Dragon Season 3. More specifically, we’re potentially looking at April or May 2026 at the earliest. After all, Season 1 premiered in August 2022 and Season 2 premiered in June 2024.

Writing of the third season hasn’t been affected by the writers strike, either. The writers strike ended in fall 2023, and House of the Dragon didn’t land its third season renewal until summer 2024. So, it means that there shouldn’t be a longer delay for the series.
