Nava Mau has declared her Emmy nomination for her role in Baby Reindeer as a major triumph for the transgender acting community.

Mau portrayed Teri in the popular Netflix series, making her the first trans woman to be nominated in the supporting actress category for a limited or anthology series or movie at the Emmys.

Speaking with Deadline shortly after receiving her nomination, Mau shared that she was overwhelmed with joy, having cried for 45 minutes. She emphasized that the recognition serves as a testament to the potential of trans actors when afforded the proper opportunities.

“Trans actors seldom get opportunities to hone their craft, evolve as artists, and be acknowledged for all that we are and can achieve,” she said.

“Being part of this show has been an invaluable experience. Every step of the way I felt that the experience was transforming me, my life, and what I believed was possible. Being acknowledged by my peers in the Academy celebrates that transformation.”

When asked if her success might pave the way for other trans actors, Mau stated, “When given opportunities, trans people can grow into them and exceed all expectations.”

Mau is not the first trans woman to receive an Emmy nomination in a performing category. Laverne Cox was recognized in 2014 for her work in Orange Is the New Black.

Mau’s nomination places her alongside co-stars like Jessica Gunning, as well as Dakota Fanning (Ripley), Lily Gladstone (Under the Bridge), Aja Naomi King (Lessons in Chemistry), Diane Lane (Feud: Capote vs. The Swans), and Kali Reis (True Detective: Night Country).

Mau’s character Teri in Baby Reindeer, is a love interest for Donny, played by series creator Richard Gadd. Mau noted that Teri felt authentic because Gadd drew from his lived experiences.

“Reading the screenplay, it felt like the first time I had seen something written by someone who had truly known and loved a trans woman,” Mau said. “Richard didn’t have to look far; he just needed to look within.”

Baby Reindeer has earned 11 nominations in total, including for best limited or anthology series. Final round Emmy voting begins on August 15 and closes on August 26. ABC will broadcast the 76th Emmy Awards live on Sunday, September 15.
