Why Jennifer Lopez Felt She Had No Choice But To Divorce Ben Affleck

Bennifer 2.0 is officially over. On Tuesday, Aug. 20, Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce from Ben Affleck after two years of marriage. The news wasn’t entirely surprising as the couple had been estranged for months, but it did mark the end of a significant pop culture era.

Interestingly, the 55-year-old singer chose to file on a Tuesday, rather than the typical Friday afternoon news dump. The filing date, which coincides with the second anniversary of their Georgia wedding, seemed to send a message. Lopez, it appears, had grown tired of waiting for Affleck to consider reconciliation throughout the summer.

Despite spending the summer on different coasts, Lopez seemed to hold out hope that her husband would come around. Sources close to the couple indicated that they weren’t on speaking terms, with a People source noting, “it’s time to move on.” Lopez was described as “very disappointed and sad,” realizing that she “just needs to look out for herself.”

An insider revealed that Affleck hadn’t shown any signs of wanting to continue their marriage. He exhibited neither commitment nor interest in making the relationship work. Lopez’s circle of friends and advisors, including Leah Remini, had warned her about Affleck’s lack of commitment. Even Lopez’s longtime manager, Benny Medina, reportedly had a difficult relationship with the actor.

A Page Six source added that Medina and Affleck “can’t stand each other,” highlighting a conflict that dates back to 2002 when the couple first dated. The turning point seemed to be when Affleck closed escrow on a $20.5 million residence on Lopez’s birthday — a clear sign that he was done, affirming her friends’ earlier warnings.

For now, Lopez is focusing on herself. According to a People source, “Jennifer is having a good summer considering everything that’s going on. She’s been off and able to focus on what’s next, enjoying time with her kids, family, and friends.” Lopez maintains a positive attitude even in imperfect situations, indicating she’s finding solace in her support system and personal time.

It wasn’t the summer Lopez expected, but the circumstances have left her with little choice. As the former couple moves on, it marks the end of their chapter together, leaving fans reflecting on the ups and downs of Bennifer 2.0.
