Why Twisters Cut the ‘Cliche’ Glen Powell Kiss Scene

Despite the evident chemistry between Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Tyler (Glen Powell), the two characters do not share a kiss in the movie Twisters. This was a deliberate choice influenced by producer Steven Spielberg, leading to the kiss scene being removed from the film.

In a conversation with Collider, Edgar-Jones and Powell elaborated on the movie’s conclusion. Toward the end, Tyler chases Kate down at the airport, and they embrace as storms cancel Kate’s flight. It almost seems like they will kiss to conclude Twisters, but they don’t, and the movie ends as the credits roll. Fan-captured footage from the production reveals a take where they do share a kiss. Spielberg wanted to avoid a “cliched” ending.

“I think it’s a Spielberg touch, wasn’t it?” said Edgar-Jones regarding the decision to cut the kiss scene in Twisters. “It prevents the film from feeling too cliched. There’s something really wonderful about the idea that their story isn’t over. They are united by their shared passion for storm chasing.”

Powell supported this viewpoint, emphasizing that Twisters isn’t primarily about their love story. He also praised Spielberg’s input.

“This movie isn’t about them finding love; it’s about Kate rediscovering her passion for storm chasing,” Powell explained. “At the end, they share a mutual passion, and Kate’s enthusiasm and sense of home are revitalized. A kiss would feel unrepresentative of the deeper goal of the movie. Spielberg’s note to remove it was excellent.”

Twisters was produced by Spielberg’s company, Amblin Entertainment, which also produced the original Twister film in 1996.

About Twisters: The film follows a storm chaser named Kate, who steps away from the field after a traumatic event. After some years, her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) convinces her to return. During her comeback, she meets Tyler Owens, a social media personality who live-streams his storm-chasing ventures on YouTube, a stark contrast to Kate’s approach. Initially rivals, they must come together to face devastating tornadoes.

Directed by Lee Isaac Chung and written by Mark L. Smith, Twisters also received a story credit from Joseph Kosinski, the director of Top Gun: Maverick. Chung, known for his Oscar-nominated film Minari, takes his first plunge into blockbuster cinema with this movie.

Twisters turned into a massive success, surpassing expectations by grossing over $80.5 million domestically during its opening weekend. The film earned a total of over $120 million worldwide.

Glen Powell’s performance in Twisters continues to build his reputation as a rising star. He first gained widespread attention for his role in Scream Queens and further solidified his place in Hollywood with Top Gun: Maverick. Powell has also starred in Anyone but You and Hit Man.

Anyone but You, a romantic comedy also starring Sydney Sweeney, was another box office success, grossing over $220 million worldwide. Hit Man marked a reunion between Powell and director Richard Linklater, who first collaborated on Fast Food Nation. The movie featured a script co-written by Powell and Linklater, with Powell also taking a lead role.

Twisters is currently playing in theaters.
