Will Smith, better known as The Fresh Prince, is back in the spotlight.

Following his return to the music scene last month with the single “You Can Make It,” and a powerful performance at the 2024 BET Awards, the Oscar and Grammy-winning rapper and actor has officially signed with SLANG, a burgeoning independent record label headed by music executive Rene McLean.

SLANG’s varied roster boasts talents like songwriter-producer Isaia Huron, Grammy-winning visionary Camper, Hip-Hop producer 30 Roc, and emerging acts such as Leaf, The Underachievers, and RY XP.

Sharing his vision for the label, McLean stated, “I’m proud to lead SLANG’s efforts to partner with quality artists and invest in their growth, regardless of genre or where they are in their respective careers. In a quickly changing music industry, SLANG artists will be surrounded by a team of like-minded strategists who will stop at nothing to further their trajectory and help them meet their goals. Our commitment to culture comes first, and we consider our SLANG roster family.”

McLean’s impressive career includes his time at Influence Media Partners, where he oversaw acquisition deals for artists like Future, Tyler Johnson, and Tainy. He’s also managed top acts such as Cam’ron, LMFAO, and Kelis, and has collaborated with icons like Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes, Pharrell, and Timbaland.

Since its release in late June, Smith’s inspirational anthem, “You Can Make It,” has garnered 1.13 million on-demand streams domestically, according to Billboard.

Discussing the song’s meaningful message, Smith remarked, “Nobody gets an easy ride. We all have a cross to bear, but there’s wisdom in the fire, and every moment is an opportunity. Embrace the journey.”

Smith first made waves in the music industry in 1987 as part of the rap duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. They achieved significant success with singles like “Summertime” and “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” the latter winning them the first rap Grammy ever in 1989. He continued his solo career with hits like “Wild Wild West” and “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It,” earning his first solo Grammy win.

Will Smith’s return to music under the new label promises to be an exciting chapter for both the artist and SLANG, reflecting his enduring talent and versatility in the entertainment industry.
