Willow Avalon Warns Bold Men in New Single “Yodelayheewho” ft. Maggie Antone

Willow Avalon is a rising female country star you’ll want to keep an eye on. Hailing from small-town Georgia, she calls herself the “Southern Belle that’s raising hell” and captures her Georgian charm with impactful lyrics. Her early hit “Gettin’ Rich, Goin’ Broke” quickly won over country music fans, largely due to her old-timey vocals that bring to mind country greats like early Dolly Parton or Loretta Lynn.

Avalon describes herself as a mix of a few other musical legends. “It’s like a smoothie of Lucinda Williams, Dolly Parton, and Stevie Nicks,” she says. Her admiration for Dolly Parton is evident, even giving a nod to their similarities in her recent single, “Hey There, Dolly.” This track perfectly encapsulates Avalon’s bubbly and open-book personality.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Willow Avalon recently, ahead of her opening set for Cage The Elephant’s Neon Pill Tour, where she is a supporting artist. During our chat, Avalon shared some insights into her upcoming record and the inspiration behind her anthemic breakup songs. We had some good ole girl talk, sharing more than we probably should have about our personal lives.

One track we discussed was her then-unreleased song, “Yodelayheewho.” The song touches on Avalon’s experiences as a 25-year-old navigating the dating scene in New York City while carving out a place in the music industry. Avalon says she “doesn’t have therapy,” so her songs often reflect her feelings as situations unfold.

We also talked about her latest single with Maggie Antone, which she mentioned is her personal favorite from the upcoming record. “It’s about a dumb man that I dated briefly, and it’s very descriptive. When I played it for my Momma, she said, ‘Oh, honey, he’s gonna know real quick.’ He’s from the small town that I’m from,” Avalon explained. “That was the one time I tried dating a man from anywhere in the state where I’m from. I like to think of it as charity work, and he was dumber than a sack of rocks. That was the end of that. Yeah, I wish him the best. So, that’s my favorite song and it’s my favorite song to play on stage.”

Avalon’s description of the song as “descriptive” hits the nail on the head. She sings about how this man wasn’t right for her and often talked down to her, painting a clear picture of a less-than-ideal relationship. When I heard the song later, I didn’t know Maggie Antone would be featured on the single. The collaboration is seamless, given their shared lyrical style of calling out men.

“You can try your best but you’ll never leave
That little town riding on my sleeves
You can tell them all that you broke my heart
But yodelayhee yodelayhee yodelayhee
Who do you think you are?”

The catchy lyrics will stick with you after just one listen. If “Yodelayheewho” is the first song you hear from Willow Avalon, you’ll likely find yourself diving deep into her catalog afterward. Avalon is a star on the rise, so get on board now before she gets even bigger.
