Wishy Won the Jackpot on ‘Triple Seven’

Alexa Viscius

Wishy have struck gold with their new album Triple Seven. The core songwriting duo of Kevin Krauter and Nina Pitchkites, along with guitarist Dimitri Morris, bassist Mitch Collins, and drummer Conner Host, craft a unique blend of alt-rock influenced by ’90s genres like dream pop, shoegaze, and Britpop. Their vision is fully realized in their debut full-length album.

The album shines with tracks like the shimmery guitar-laden title track and the dreamy duet “Persuasion” featuring back-and-forth vocals between Krauter and Pitchkites. Triple Seven firmly establishes Wishy as one of the most promising new bands in indie rock today, showcasing a definite, cohesive sound.

In anticipation of the album’s release this Friday, Krauter and Pitchkites had a Q&A session with Uproxx where they discussed a variety of topics, including their inspirations and favorite experiences.

What are four words you would use to describe your music?

Krauter: Crazy, sexy, colorful, energetic.

It’s 2050 and people are still listening to your music. How would you like it to be remembered?

Krauter: As the kind of music that makes people feel happy and full of life.

Who has most inspired your work, and why?

Pitchkites: Molly Rankin from Alvvays. Her lyrics are intentional and genuine, with the perfect balance of whimsy and cheekiness, which I always strive for in my writing.

Where did you eat the best meal of your life and what was it?

Krauter: Little India at 52nd and College in Indianapolis. The butter chicken is unbelievable.

Tell us about the best concert you’ve attended.

Pitchkites: Probably Caroline Polachek last year. Her live performance is incredibly inspiring, combining raw talent with theatrical elements.

What song never fails to make you emotional?

Krauter: “I’m With You” by Avril Lavigne.

What’s the last thing you Googled?

Krauter: Faeries by Brian Froud, used copy for sale.

Where’s the weirdest place you ever crashed while on tour?

Krauter: We once drove through the night to NYC from Cincinnati and took long naps on recliner chairs at the King Spa in New Jersey.

What’s your favorite city to perform in, and where would you like to perform for the first time?

Pitchkites: LA is my favorite, I love being there and seeing familiar faces. I hope to play in Tokyo or Singapore soon!

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to your 18-year-old self?

Pitchkites: Quit worrying about the future so much!

What’s one of your hidden talents?

Pitchkites: I can do a convincing Yoshi impression.

If you had a million dollars to donate to charity, what cause would you support and why?

Krauter: Liberation of Palestine from apartheid occupation. Noam Chomsky has a great lecture from 2011 on the subject.

What are your thoughts on AI and the future of music?

Pitchkites: I believe AI has uses outside of art but I’m against it in artistic creation. Art should heal the human spirit and relate us to one another. There are many human artists whose work surpasses what AI can create, and they deserve to be recognized and compensated. Most people seem to feel the same, so I’m not too worried about AI replacing human talent.

You’re throwing a music festival. Who are your 5 dream artists and where would it be?

Krauter: The Bats, The Sundays, Ivy, Hole, The Radio Dept. Location: someone’s barbecue.

Who’s your favorite person to follow on social media?

Pitchkites: @servideo— hilarious stuff.

What’s the story behind your first or favorite tattoo?

Pitchkites: I recently got a tattoo from my friend Kaitlin. It’s a sketch they did of Arthur Russell’s album Love Is Overtaking Me, one of my all-time favorite records.

What is your pre-show ritual?

Krauter: Hacky sack with the band.

Who was your first celebrity crush?

Pitchkites: Jeremy Sumpter in the live-action Peter Pan (2003).

You have a month off and resources for a dream vacation. Where are you going and who is coming with you?

Krauter: Somewhere tropical with the love of my life.

What is your biggest fear?

Pitchkites: Living with regret.
