WNBA star Brittney Griner and her wife, Cherelle Griner, have welcomed a baby boy.

Brittney Griner shared the joyous news during an appearance on the CBS Sports show “We Need to Talk.” The 33-year-old athlete, who gained significant media attention in 2022 after being arrested in Russia for cannabis possession, revealed that their son was born on July 8. The couple had previously announced plans to name the child Bash.

“He is amazing,” Griner expressed on the show. “They say as soon as you see him, everything that you thought mattered just goes out the window, and that’s literally what happens.”

Griner, who plays center for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, is also gearing up to represent the U.S. women’s national basketball team at the Paris Olympics this summer. She previously won gold medals with the team at the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games.

“It kind of sucks because I’ve got to leave, but at the same time, he’ll understand,” Griner noted, adding, “My whole phone is turned into him now.”

Cherelle Griner had been documenting her pregnancy journey on Instagram. In April, she posted, “Can’t believe we’re less than three months away from meeting our favorite human being,” accompanied by the hashtag #BabyGrinerComingSoon.

Brittney Griner’s release in December 2022 from a Russian prison was part of a prisoner swap following her February 2022 arrest on drug charges. “The Hollywood Reporter” indicated that Griner’s Russian detention would be the focus of an ESPN documentary and a potential scripted series by ABC Signature.
