Wolverine Slams ‘Foolish’ Deadpool Detail

Ryan Reynolds has described a scene from “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” as one of the most “foolish” moments in cinematic history.

Reynolds first portrayed Deadpool in the Hugh Jackman-led X-Men spin-off film, which was not well received by superhero fans upon its release in 2009.

The depiction of Deadpool in the film was heavily criticized right from the start, with many fans arguing that the watered-down version of the character entirely missed the essence of the foul-mouthed anti-hero they loved.

Fortunately, Reynolds got a second chance to bring the character to life in a standalone “Deadpool” film that targeted an adult audience and received critical acclaim upon its release in 2016.

This standalone film was followed by a blockbuster sequel in 2018. Now, Deadpool and Wolverine are set to reunite in an upcoming film that will introduce both characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

As the release date approaches, Reynolds is reflecting on the failures of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” admitting, “It’s easy to say we got some things wrong.”

He pointed out one particular aspect that he considered a significant low point for the film. Speaking to Variety, Reynolds stated, “Deadpool sewing up his mouth was one of the all-time foolish studio notes.”

In the 2009 film, Deadpool is shown with his mouth surgically sealed, a move that stripped the character—known for his fourth wall-breaking, foul-mouthed wisecracks—of the very qualities that made him a fan favorite in the comic books.

This alteration was seen as sacrilege by many, especially considering Deadpool’s popular nickname is “the merc with a mouth.”

However, Reynolds expressed that despite the film’s shortcomings, he is “so grateful for it” because it gave him the opportunity to work with Jackman.

“Hugh was a huge influence on me. It was the first time I saw how a movie star operates on set, and it defied all the preconceived notions for a movie star. He was so warm and welcoming. He made it safe to play. He knew every single person’s name,” Reynolds shared.

The much-anticipated “Deadpool & Wolverine” film is set to be released on July 26.
