Worldwide Sales for Pablo Larraín’s ‘Maria’ Starring Angelina Jolie After Venice Debut

FilmNation has secured international distribution deals for Pablo Larraín’s latest biopic, Maria, following its well-received debut at the Venice Film Festival.

The film, celebrated with a 10-minute ovation at Venice, will be distributed by Studiocanal in the UK, Germany, and Poland, ARP in France, 01 Distribution in Italy, Sun Distribution in regions including LATAM, Spain, Portugal, South Africa, and The Searchers in the Benelux countries.

Further deals have been made for Switzerland (Pathe), the Czech Republic (AQS), Greece (Faliro House), Israel (Lev), the Middle East (Italia), Bulgaria and Ex-Yugo (MCF), Ukraine (Green Light), the Baltics (Acme), and Turkey (Bir).

Directed by Larraín and written by Steven Knight, Maria tells the story of the world-renowned opera singer Maria Callas, portrayed by Angelina Jolie, focusing on her final days in 1970s Paris.

The film is produced by Juan de Dios Larraín, Jonas Dornbach, and Lorenzo Mieli and financed by the Fremantle Group. The production companies involved are The Apartment, Fabula, Komplizen, and Fremantle. Netflix will release the film in the United States.

The premiere was attended by Larraín, Jolie, and co-stars Pierfrancesco Favino and Alba Rohrwacher. The emotional screening saw the audience chanting Jolie’s name as she descended from the gallery to acknowledge the applause, tears in her eyes.

Earlier in the day, at a press conference, Larraín spoke of Callas as “the greatest voice in history who had a very beautiful and difficult life.” He emphasized that the film would not exist without Angelina Jolie’s involvement.

Maria is the third in Larraín’s series of films about iconic female figures, following Jackie (2016) and Spencer (2021).

The Venice Film Festival continues until September 7.
