Yankees’ Anthony Rizzo Receives Warm Welcome in Wrigley Field Return

CHICAGO — The atmosphere at Wrigley Field buzzed with excitement as Anthony Rizzo re-entered the park, greeted by a barrage of cheers. Friday marked his first game back in Chicago since his trade from the Cubs to the New York Yankees in July 2021.

Once introduced with the lineup, Rizzo was met with enthusiastic standing ovations from the home crowd. “This was definitely circled on the calendar for me, my family, all my friends,” he remarked prior to the game.

Rizzo holds a significant place in Cubs history. Over his nine-plus seasons with the team, he established himself as a fan favorite, contributing to numerous successful seasons. He recorded a batting average of .272, along with 242 home runs and 784 RBIs in 1,308 games. His impressive skills earned him three selections to the NL All-Star team and four Gold Glove awards.

His presence was instrumental in the Cubs’ landmark victory in the 2016 World Series, which marked the franchise’s first championship in 108 years. Rizzo formed part of a formidable team alongside players like Kris Bryant, Javier Báez, Jon Lester, and Kyle Hendricks.

“This is a special place to play,” Rizzo said, reaffirming the unique bond he shares with the city and its fans. “Anyone who’s played here will say the same thing.”

Before the game commenced, the Cubs honored Rizzo with a pre-game video celebrating his contributions both on and off the field. This tribute spotlighted his charitable work with pediatric cancer patients at Lurie Children’s Hospital. The crowd erupted in cheers as the video played, and the applause swelled once it concluded.

In response to the heartfelt tribute, Rizzo emerged from the visitor’s dugout, tipping his hat in gratitude. He took a moment to acknowledge fans in the bleachers, waving as he prepared for the game.

As Rizzo stepped up to the plate for the first time in the second inning, the Cubs played his walk-up music from his days with the team. This prompted yet another round of thunderous applause, and Rizzo couldn’t help but smile as he waved to the audience, lifting his batting helmet in acknowledgment.

“He’s an iconic player for them,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone noted, recognizing Rizzo’s pivotal role in the Cubs’ championship run after years of disappointment.

Reflecting on the day, the 35-year-old Rizzo shared that he had arranged for about 40 to 50 tickets for family and friends to attend the game. “It’s been a fun few years for me personally, playing in New York, loving the Yankees,” Rizzo said. “To come back here, I’ll enjoy every second.”
