It has been years since rapper YNW Melly, whose real name is Jamell Maurice Demons, was incarcerated for allegedly killing two of his childhood friends, Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas and Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams.

The “Murder on My Mind” artist allegedly shot Thomas and Williams while his co-defendant, YNW Bortlen, drove them to a hospital to falsely claim they were victims of a drive-by shooting.

Melly was charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the incident, which occurred on October 28, 2018. Since then, there have been significant developments in his case, including a mistrial, a jail transfer, and accusations of witness tampering.

The rapper has been transferred from Broward County Jail to Paul Rein Detention Facility in Pompano Beach. Recently, Judge Martin Fein scheduled the new trial date for September 10, 2025. Additionally, a pretrial meeting for the tampering case was set for December 5, 2024.

Following the announcement of the trial date, Melly’s mother shared a reaction video. If found guilty, Melly could face the death penalty.

YNW Melly gained fame by releasing his songs on SoundCloud, with lyrics often discussing street violence and the struggles of growing up in poverty. His track “Mixed Personalities” features Kanye West.

Much of his teenage years were spent incarcerated for various crimes, including aggravated assault, probation violations, and a drive-by shooting near a high school. After the deaths of Thomas and Williams, Melly has mostly been held at Broward County Jail in Florida, awaiting his trials.

The first trial was declared a mistrial when the jury could not reach a unanimous decision. During this period, Melly faced another serious accusation: witness tampering.

Melly and his co-defendant, YNW Bortlen, allegedly used the code word “Rihanna” to discuss a witness they wanted to prevent from testifying. This witness is reportedly Melly’s ex-girlfriend, Mariah Hamilton.

In one alleged text from an inmate named Terrence Mathis, the message read, “Tell her keep vibin in the Maybach like she been doing.” Hamilton ultimately did not testify in court.

YNW Melly’s new trial was initially set to start on October 9, 2023. However, as of January 2024, the trial has been postponed. This delay is due to Melly’s defense team seeking to exclude a documentary video from the evidence.

The video, filmed shortly before the murders, frequently shows Melly holding a weapon and discussing the deaths of Thomas and Williams. Prosecutors argue that the video places YNW Melly at the crime scene and helps prove his involvement. They have filed an appeal against the motion to suppress the video from evidence.

As the legal battles continue to unfold, the future remains uncertain for YNW Melly. With the weighty charges and possible penalties looming, all eyes are on the upcoming court proceedings.
