Young Mufasa and Scar: From Brothers to Enemies

Disney offered an extended preview of their highly anticipated film, “Mufasa: The Lion King,” at the D23 event on Friday night.

Before delving into the film, singers graced the stage and teased the opening song, setting the atmosphere for what was to come. Director Barry Jenkins then took the spotlight, expressing his deep connection to “The Lion King” franchise. “Like all of you, ‘The Lion King’ made an indelible mark on me,” Jenkins shared. “Hearing the music and feeling every emotion as the story unfolded, a father bestowing a legacy upon his son, a pride being built anew, and a young lion rising to his destiny. Telling his story is an absolute honor.”

In an exciting announcement, Jenkins revealed that Lin-Manuel Miranda will be writing the film’s original songs. Miranda received a standing ovation as he joined Jenkins on stage, giving attendees a preview of the song, “I Always Wanted a Brother.”

This prequel is set before the events of the 2019 live-action reimagining. Directed by Jenkins, “Mufasa” centers on the early life of the future ruler of Pride Rock and his complex relationship with his younger brother, Scar. The notable voice cast features Aaron Pierre as the younger Mufasa and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as the younger Scar. Beyoncé Knowles-Carter will reprise her role as Nala, with her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, voicing Kiara, the daughter of King Simba and Queen Nala.

A new trailer showcased the dynamic between a young Mufasa and Scar, highlighting how their bond deteriorates from sibling camaraderie to rivalry.

The film boasts fresh talent additions such as Tiffany Boone as Sarabi, Kagiso Lediga as Young Rafiki, and Preston Nyman as Zazu. Mads Mikkelsen takes on the role of Kiros, a powerful lion with ambitious plans for his pride. The roster also includes Thandiwe Newton as Eshe, Lennie James as Obasi, Anika Noni Rose as Afia, and Keith David as Masego.

Jenkins collaborates once again with his trusted team, including composer Nicholas Britell, editor Joi McMillon, and cinematographer James Laxton. Together, they aim to bring a compelling new chapter to the beloved franchise.

The 2019 remake of “The Lion King,” directed by Jon Favreau, garnered enormous success, amassing $1.66 billion worldwide and joining the elite club of Disney films that grossed over a billion dollars that year.

“Mufasa: The Lion King” is set to roar into theaters on December 20.
