Zootopia 2 Is Coming: Everything You Need to Know

The original Zootopia made a significant impact for Disney back in 2016, leaving fans eagerly awaiting a sequel. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the movie’s co-director, Byron Howard, shared the fans’ sentiments: “We all loved the world [of Zootopia] so much and got so attached to the characters that we got a little sad when the film finally came out because we felt like, ‘Well, we’re kind of done with it.’ And it’s nice that there’s this potential for it to get bigger.”

Well, it’s official – Zootopia 2 is on the way, as Disney CEO Bob Iger announced in 2023. Here’s an overview of everything we know about it so far, including the release date, plot, cast, and more.

In February 2024, Iger provided release windows for highly anticipated sequels, including Toy Story 5 and Frozen 3, both scheduled for 2026. Fans of Zootopia will be pleased to know they won’t have to wait as long for Zootopia 2, which is set to premiere on November 26, 2025.

The plot details for Zootopia 2 remain under wraps, but a brief description from IMDB gives a hint: “Brave rabbit cop Judy Hopps and her friend, the fox Nick Wilde, team up again to crack a new case, the most perilous and intricate of their careers.” It’s evident that Judy and Nick will return as main characters. Additionally, the studio has hinted that Zootopia 2 will delve into a mystery within the reptile community. Promotional imagery includes a large “2” in Zootopia 2, styled with the end of a snake’s tail, introducing a new character named Gary the Snake.

A “first look” clip reveals Nick and Judy visiting Marsh Market, a town with hippos and beavers. More characters from the original Zootopia, such as Mr. Big, Clawhauser, and Flash the Sloth, are also expected to return.

The full voice cast for Zootopia 2 hasn’t been confirmed. However, Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman will reprise their roles as Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, respectively. A new star, Ke Huy Quan, has been cast in the role of Gary the Snake.

Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy Hopps

Ginnifer Goodwin returns as Judy Hopps, the dedicated police officer bunny committed to combating crime and corruption. Goodwin is known for her roles in the HBO series Big Love and the ABC series Once Upon a Time. Her film credits include Mona Lisa Smile (2003), He’s Just Not That Into You (2009), Something Borrowed (2011), and Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast (2014).

Jason Bateman as Nick Wilde

Jason Bateman will return as Nick Wilde, the fox and former con artist who now helps solve crimes. Bateman is famous for his roles in Arrested Development and Ozark. His film credits include The Switch (2010), Horrible Bosses (2011), This Is Where I Leave You (2014), and Game Night (2018).

Ke Huy Quan as Gary the Snake

Ke Huy Quan joins the cast as Gary the Snake, a character about whom little is known. Quan gained fame as a child actor in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) and The Goonies (1985). After a long hiatus, he made a notable comeback with his Oscar-winning role in Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022).

Zootopia 2 will be directed by Jared Bush, who co-directed the first movie and co-wrote the screenplay. Bush also contributed to the Disney film Moana (2016) and directed 2021’s critically acclaimed Encanto.

As of now, no official trailer for Zootopia 2 has been released.

Zootopia 2 is slated for a theatrical release on November 26, 2025, with no confirmed streaming platform dates yet. A 2019 article from Collider suggested that Disney movies typically stay in theaters for about 90 days before becoming available for digital purchase and subsequently on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD. It could take up to seven months from the theater release for the sequel to be available on streaming platforms.

Plot specifics, including the identity of Zootopia 2‘s villain, remain unknown. However, with new characters like Gary the Snake, the sequel could offer another round of surprising twists similar to the first film’s theme of challenging preconceived notions.
