Alabama plans to use nitrogen gas for execution of inmate who survived lethal injection effort

Alabama has scheduled the upcoming execution of Alan Eugene Miller, a convicted murderer. Miller will become the second U.S. inmate to be put to death using nitrogen gas. Kenneth Smith was the first person executed this way in January. Miller’s execution is set for Sept. 26 for the 1999 murders of three men. Nitrogen hypoxia is a controversial method allowed in only a few states. Critics argue it may cause harm and violate human rights. Alabama previously botched Miller’s execution attempt due to time and vein access issues. Alabama’s switch to nitrogen hypoxia is due to a shortage of lethal injection drugs.
