All You Need to Know About Bob Odenkirk’s ‘John Wick’-Style Sequel

Universal

Bob Odenkirk, known for his comedic roles and perfect timing, is not the first actor who comes to mind when thinking of action stars. However, Hollywood finally gave him a chance to showcase his action star potential in 2021.

Derek Kolstad, the creator of John Wick, wrote Nobody, an action-packed thriller that features Odenkirk as Hutch Mansell, a former government assassin who has switched to a quiet life as a family man. Unfortunately, Hutch gets pulled back into the violent world of crime when a mob boss targets him.

Despite its unconventional lead, Nobody turned out to be a hit and thrilled Odenkirk. He revealed to the crowd at the Venice Film Festival in 2022 that he was very surprised by the film’s success. He mentioned that his character, Saul Goodman from Better Call Saul, inspired him for the role. “I had initiated that project because I had a feeling that the character I was developing in Better Call Saul was the kind of character you see in an action film. He has earnest desires and he is willing to sacrifice himself,” Odenkirk said.

The success of Nobody quickly led to the announcement of a sequel, tentatively titled Nobody 2. Directed by Timo Tjahjanto and written by Kolstad, the sequel is already generating excitement. Although a crossover with the John Wick series is off the table for now, it’s not impossible for future collaborations.

In the first film, Odenkirk’s character Hutch Mansell leaves his past as an assassin behind to live a quiet life as an office worker and family man. However, when his home is burglarized, Hutch decides to revisit his violent skills, drawing the attention of the Russian mafia. The movie ends on a cliffhanger, with Hutch receiving a mysterious phone call indicating that his life of crime is far from over. Additionally, a post-credits scene shows Hutch’s father and brother arming themselves, hinting at more action to come.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed that Bob Odenkirk would return as Hutch for the sequel, which is expected to start production this fall. Christopher Lloyd will reprise his role as Hutch’s father, David, a retired FBI agent. Connie Nielsen is also set to return as Hutch’s wife, Becca. In addition, Sharon Stone has joined the cast as an unnamed villain.

Universal Pictures has set a release date of August 15, 2025, for Nobody 2, though this date could change depending on the filming schedule. Production faced initial delays due to scheduling conflicts, but the movie is still on track for a summer release next year.

As of now, there is no trailer for Nobody 2. However, for those wanting to catch up, the trailer for the first Nobody is available and the movie is streaming on Hulu. Fans can also watch Better Call Saul on Netflix for more of Odenkirk’s impressive acting.
