After losing her husband of 24 years, Laura Kowal joined an online dating site to date again. She met Frank Borg, who claimed to be a Swedish investment adviser. They began a romantic relationship, but it turned furtive. Kowal’s daughter, Kelly Gowe, received a call from a federal investigator in August 2020, informing her that her mother may have been a victim of a fraud scam. Kowal sent $1.5 million to fake investments. Her body was found in the Mississippi River. Gowe now advocates for victims of romance scams to raise awareness and prevent others from falling victim to this crime.
