Andy King of Fyre Festival Gets a Second Chance on ‘The Anonymous’ (Exclusive)

USA

Event producer Andy King’s life took an unexpected turn in 2019 when he appeared in a Netflix documentary titled FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened. The documentary covered the infamous Fyre Festival fiasco orchestrated by Billy McFarland, and Andy emerged as an unforgettable character due to one particular anecdote he shared.

During the documentary, Andy recounted a bizarre request from Billy asking him, a gay man, to perform a sexual favor for a customs officer to secure the festival’s water supply. The scene quickly became a viral internet moment, making Andy a meme sensation overnight.

This newfound notoriety from FYRE brought Andy widespread recognition, but he’s now seeking a different kind of spotlight. He’s set to appear on USA’s new reality TV competition show, The Anonymous, aiming to introduce viewers to “the real Andy King.”

Andy shared his thoughts on this new opportunity, emphasizing how it came at just the right moment in his life. After losing his anonymity because of the FYRE documentary, Andy realized he wanted to redefine his public image. The opportunity to be part of The Anonymous seemed like a perfect fit.

Recalling the past, Andy mentioned that he had multiple offers to start his own reality show, including an international event-saving series with Netflix. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic derailed those plans. Andy continued to work as an event producer but frequently questioned whether being famous for something embarrassing was his ultimate destiny.

Eventually, The Anonymous presented itself as a chance for a fresh start. Andy sees this show as a platform to showcase a different side of himself, a move away from his FYRE notoriety. “I lost my anonymity with FYRE. I became famous overnight. But it wasn’t necessarily the fame that I really wanted,” he admitted.

In the new chapter of his life on The Anonymous, Andy hopes nothing will be as demanding as his time with the Fyre Festival. He plans to rely on humor and teamwork to win over his new teammates and eliminate competitors in the show. “I’m the ultimate team player,” Andy claimed. “I’m a people person who’ll do whatever it takes to make people happy and to make something successful.”

While relishing his new role, Andy is clear about one thing: he will not be involved in any future plans for a Fyre Festival. Billy McFarland, who spent time in federal prison for defrauding investors and ticket buyers, was released in March 2022 and announced plans for Fyre Festival 2.0. Billy even contacted Andy to assist with the new event.

Andy revealed that he met with Billy in New York to encourage him to repay as much money as possible to those he defrauded. However, he eventually severed ties with Billy in November 2023 and is skeptical about the feasibility of another festival without the right infrastructure and partners.

“I know there were people looking to partner with him, but he’s kind of gone rogue,” Andy remarked. “Unless he has a solid infrastructure and backers, another festival is unlikely.”

Even though Andy still gets recognized for his role in FYRE, he’s thankful for the chance to move on with The Anonymous. He has forged meaningful relationships with his castmates, many of whom have backgrounds in other TV shows.

“We become a family, and that’s kind of fun,” he shared. “I would never have met these kids before or developed these relationships, so I am grateful to the show for that.”
