Apple+ Comedy Renewal Likely, Release Date Still TBD

The beloved soccer coach, Ted Lasso, may soon grace our screens once again.

The world hasn’t seen the last of Ted Lasso and AFC Richmond, as it was announced Saturday that a fourth season of the show is in development. Originally envisioned as a three-season arc by co-creator Jason Sudeikis, the idea of continuing the storyline was never completely off the table after the conclusion of Season 3.

Sudeikis and his team have already collected 13 Emmys for the series, which became Apple+’s flagship and most-watched original show following its release in August 2020.

An exclusive report from Deadline published Saturday revealed that Warner Bros. Television, the studio behind “Ted Lasso,” has picked up the options of three original cast members. These actors were initially contracted under the UK acting union Equity.

The actors in question are Hannah Waddingham, who portrays AFC Richmond owner Rebecca Walton, Brett Goldstein, known for his role as the tough Roy Kent, and Jeremy Swift, who plays the adored Director of Football Operations, Leslie Higgins.

This outreach to the trio appears to be just the beginning. The studio is expected to start reaching out to other cast members with SAG-AFRA contracts whose options have expired, requiring new deals to be made. This could include Sudeikis himself, Brendan Hunt, and Juno Temple.

It’s unclear exactly which actors will be approached for a Season 4 appearance, but a writer’s room is reportedly coming together. Much of the show’s future success hinges on Sudeikis’ willingness to continue with the project.

Deadline reports that if everything aligns, production on a fourth season could potentially begin in early 2025. This timeline suggests that Apple+ likely won’t release any new episodes until at least the end of that year.
