Arizona House of Representatives passes bill to repeal 1864 abortion law, legislation moves to state Senate for further consideration

The Arizona House, controlled by Republicans, approved a measure to repeal a nearly 160-year-old abortion law that would ban nearly all abortions, transferring it to the state Senate for consideration on May 1. The law is set to go into effect on June 8, superseding the current 15-week abortion ban. Despite GOP House Speaker Ben Toma’s attempts to block the bill, three Republicans and all Democrats voted in favor. The state Supreme Court ruling allowed enforcement of the restrictive law, prompting a push for repeal in the Arizona State Legislature. Democratic Rep. Stephanie Stahl Hamilton expressed gratitude for progress in repealing the ban.
