Arizona Senate to Vote on Repealing 1864 Abortion Ban

The Arizona Senate is poised to try to repeal a near-total ban on abortion dating back to 1864, upheld by the state’s Supreme Court. The bill must pass the Senate and be signed by Gov. Katie Hobbs. Last week, the House approved the repeal. Democrats are optimistic that they can secure enough Republican votes in the Senate to pass the repeal. Even if successful, the repeal won’t take effect immediately due to legislative rules, potentially prolonging the process. A possible ballot amendment allowing voters to decide on abortion rights may impact the outcome.
