Arizona Senate to vote on repealing 1864 abortion ban

The Arizona Senate is set to vote on repealing a near-total abortion ban from 1864. After the state House approved the bill, it could head to Gov. Katie Hobbs for her signature. If passed, doctors could avoid prison for providing abortion care. Republicans control the Senate, but Democrats may secure the votes needed for repeal. Even if both chambers pass the bill, it wouldn’t take effect until after 90 days. The state Supreme Court’s recent ruling upheld the ban, leading to discussions about competing ballot measures on abortion rights in November.
