After a decade-long hiatus, the Armored Core series has made a triumphant return with its latest installment, Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon. Developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, this title marks a significant milestone as it reintroduces fans to the high-octane world of mecha-based vehicular combat. Officially released on August 25, 2023, the game is available on multiple platforms including PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
The game has not only received a warm reception from critics but has also achieved remarkable commercial success, selling over 2.8 million copies by October 2023. This makes it the highest-selling entry in the Armored Core series to date.
Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon emphasizes strategic combat with customizable mechs, known as Armored Cores. Players can modify these mechs extensively using various parts to enhance their combat capabilities. The game offers a plethora of weapons that can be mounted on different parts of the mech, providing players with the flexibility to tailor their combat style to their preferences.
The game continues to feature the arena-style combat system its predecessors were known for, including a “combat aptitude evaluation program” where players can test their skills against NPC mechs. Additionally, the introduction of online multiplayer modes, including 1-v-1 and 3-v-3 matches, adds a competitive edge to the gameplay. Unlike previous titles in the series, Armored Core VI has removed the debt system, allowing players to retry missions without financial penalties, thus encouraging experimentation and learning.
The narrative of Armored Core VI is set on the frontier planet of Rubicon 3, where a catastrophic event linked to a substance called Coral has wreaked havoc. Players step into the shoes of an augmented human, codenamed “C4-621” or “Raven,” who navigates through the complex conflicts involving various factions on Rubicon 3. The story evolves based on player decisions, leading to multiple potential endings that add depth and replayability to the game.
The plot thickens as the protagonist, Raven, encounters allies and adversaries, each with their own unique backgrounds and motives. The dynamic interactions and the unfolding mystery of the Coral substance drive the narrative forward, making each playthrough uniquely engaging.
The development of Armored Core VI was first hinted at by FromSoftware’s president Hidetaka Miyazaki back in 2016 and was officially announced in 2022. Under the direction of Masaru Yamamura, the game was crafted with a focus on delivering a blend of nostalgic and innovative combat mechanics. The soundtrack, composed by Kota Hoshino among others, complements the game’s atmosphere, enhancing the overall immersive experience.
Upon release, the game was met with generally favorable reviews, praised for its intricate mechanics and engaging storyline. It performed exceptionally well in sales, particularly in Japan where it topped the charts for physical copies sold during its launch week.
Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon has successfully revitalized a beloved series while introducing it to a new generation of gamers. Its strategic gameplay, compelling narrative, and high replay value have cemented its status as a standout title in the mecha genre.
