Actress Ayo Edebiri was delighted to become the center of an internet prank that claimed she was Irish. However, she recently shed some light on the fact that this might not be entirely false.

Born and raised in Boston, Edebiri has humorously mentioned her ‘Irish roots’ and ‘family in Ireland’ in various interviews. In a more recent chat with The Six O’Clock Show on Virgin Media Television, she provided a surprising revelation that she does indeed have family in Ireland.

“Nobody believes me but I do have family there,” Edebiri confirmed. “They’re real.”

Lionel Boyce, her co-star from The Bear who portrayed Marcus, supported her statement, saying, “I believe you. You’ve said this to me many a time.”

“My cousins are there,” Edebiri continued. “One of my cousins, he’s like 17, he’s really good at rugby apparently. Learned that over Zoom.”

Since gaining fame from her role in The Bear, Edebiri has charmed audiences with her charismatic persona and humorous remarks. When she jokingly referred to Ireland as her ‘home nation,’ many Irish people embraced the idea and were happy to claim her as one of their own.

Despite leaning into the joke, and even wearing an Irish t-shirt during her SNL debut, Edebiri has never been to Ireland. However, a visit is clearly on her agenda.

“I gotta take a tour,” she said to the interviewers. “I gotta go do Christmas in Killarney, and all the rest. I do want to go, what’s up with the tourism board, let’s go, hit my people up.”

“Your people await you,” her co-star affirmed.
