Beloved ostrich tragically passes away after accidentally ingesting zoo employee’s keys

A beloved 5-year-old ostrich named Karen from the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center in Kansas died after swallowing a staff member’s keys. Despite efforts by experts to minimize the impact of the keys through surgical and non-surgical methods, they were unsuccessful. Karen was euthanized and passed away in staff’s hands. The ostrich had been at the zoo since 2023 and was known for playing in water and dancing. The zoo expressed devastation over Karen’s loss and stated that appropriate actions will be taken regarding the team member involved. Safety protocols for the animals will also be reviewed and enhanced. The Topeka Zoo is home to over 300 animals.
