Ben Affleck’s ‘Big Highs and Lows’ from Mood Swings Ended Marriage to J.Lo

Ben Affleck’s ‘mood swings’ were reportedly part of the reason he and Jennifer Lopez split.

The Golden Globe winner, 52, known for his ‘darkness,’ drove a wedge in his relationship with the “Let’s Get Loud” singer due to his uncontrollable ‘highs’ and ‘lows,’ according to a source close to the couple speaking to PEOPLE on Saturday.

Ben and Jennifer filed for divorce on August 20, coinciding with their second wedding anniversary.

“The truth is there was a great deal of love, but also, unfortunately, Ben’s erratic mood swings became evident. He couldn’t hide them from the press, despite his efforts,” the insider revealed.

“You could see the erratic behavior and the giant mood swings,” the source added, explaining that Ben can go from being ‘incredibly happy and warm’ to displaying ‘his deepest, darkest behavior.’

The Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice actor reportedly tried to shield his unbalanced behavior from public view. “I think he was signaling a message to the press while still participating,” the insider noted.

Deciding to split wasn’t easy for the pair, as lingering feelings remained. “They were trying to work through it, but the mood swings and the significant highs and lows created a pervasive toxicity,” the source explained. “No one can help you—you have to help yourself.”

“But I would not be bold enough to say there isn’t love—of course, there is,” the source admitted, adding, “The world was rooting for them, but who he said he was and who he turned out to be were two different people.”

Ben and Jen first began dating in 2002 after playing lovers on the set of Gigli (2003) and quickly got engaged. They split up in 2004, just before their planned wedding.

Both went on to marry others—Jennifer with Marc Anthony in 2004, and Ben with Jennifer Garner in 2005. After splitting from their respective partners, they found their way back to each other and rekindled their romance in 2021, finally saying ‘I do’ in a Las Vegas ceremony in July 2022.

The divorce filings show they listed their date of separation as April 26, 2024. This doesn’t come as a surprise to fans, as the couple had sparked split rumors months prior.

Their assets are currently undecided, as Ben and Jen did not have a prenuptial agreement before marrying.
