Bicep’s Matt McBriar Undergoes Surgery for Non-Cancerous Brain Tumor

Matt McBriar of the U.K. electronic duo Bicep announced Tuesday that he underwent surgery for a benign brain tumor last week.

In a statement posted on the duo’s Instagram, McBriar shared that doctors found a large tumor on his pituitary gland following a series of tests. Discovering this tumor early was crucial, as McBriar noted it could have caused significant issues, including vision loss, if discovered later due to its proximity to his optic nerves.

Despite undergoing tests, McBriar continued performing at shows, emphasizing the importance of keeping his mind occupied. Meanwhile, Andy Ferguson, the other half of Bicep, will perform solo until McBriar is fully recovered.

Bicep’s upcoming performances include events like Creamfields in the U.K., Philadelphia’s Making Time Festival, The Brooklyn Mirage, Portola in San Francisco, and San Diego’s CRSSD Festival. All these shows will feature their acclaimed AV show, Chroma.

McBriar’s full statement reveals more details about his condition and recovery journey:

Towards the end of 2023, I began experiencing intense localized headaches combined with a new type of fatigue. Several blood tests in spring 2024 indicated that something was amiss, leading my GP to schedule an MRI and a CT scan.

These tests revealed a rare Craniopharyngioma tumor on my pituitary gland. Thankfully, it is almost certainly non-cancerous, and we caught it early. Had it been discovered later, the tumor might have caused severe issues, including vision loss, due to its size and position pressing on my optic nerves.

I underwent numerous hospital appointments and tests, culminating in surgery on August 9th. Throughout this period, I chose to continue with my usual activities and performances to keep my mind engaged. The operation went well, and I am currently recovering in the hospital. The recovery process will take at least 6-8 weeks and involves extensive aftercare, but I feel incredibly fortunate and grateful.

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the amazing consultants, surgeons, doctors, and nurses at the NHS who have taken such excellent care of me with kindness and empathy.

The support I have received has been phenomenal. Appointments were arranged swiftly, often with hours’ notice, and communication was direct and efficient. Our healthcare system is invaluable and worth cherishing.

While I recover, Andy will perform at upcoming shows as Bicep solo until further notice. Thank you for your understanding.

Lastly, I want to express a sincere thank you to my family, friends, and colleagues, who have been my unwavering support throughout this journey.
