Biden administration completes regulations for power plant emissions

The Biden administration finalized rules to reduce pollution from power plants, requiring coal and natural gas plants to cut or capture 90% of their climate pollution by 2032. The EPA also announced stricter rules for mercury emissions, toxic wastewater, and coal ash disposal. President Biden is aiming to cement his climate legacy, contrasting with his predecessor who rolled back environmental rules. The rules aim to prevent 1.4 billion metric tons of pollution by 2047. Some industry stakeholders are challenging the rules, arguing they are unrealistic. The EPA strengthened the rules from its original proposal, setting deadlines for plant retirement and encouraging cleaner energy sources.
