Biden administration officially implements minimum staffing requirements at nursing homes after heated debate

The Biden administration announced the first-ever minimum staffing rule for nursing homes, requiring at least 3.48 hours of nursing care per resident per day, including registered nurses and nurse aides. The rule aims to address chronic understaffing in nursing homes that can lead to sub-standard care. However, nursing home operators objected, citing difficulties in filling open positions. Consumer advocates were also dissatisfied, saying the rule doesn’t go far enough to protect residents. Some lawmakers support the rule, while others are concerned it could lead to facility closures. The administration also announced a rule to improve access to home care services and elevate caregiving jobs.
