Biden administration safeguards patient confidentiality for abortion-related medical records

The Biden administration has finalized a new rule that will protect the medical records of women seeking abortions in states where it is legal from being used in criminal investigations. This rule is an update to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 and aims to prevent law enforcement from accessing reproductive health care records from providers or health insurers in states with strict abortion rules. While Republicans have criticized the rule, it does not extend to protecting women who order abortion pills online or require law enforcement to obtain a warrant for medical records. Democratic-controlled states have similar laws in place to protect medical providers and patients involved in abortions.
