Biden to Open for Harris at Democrats’ Convention on Monday

Four weeks after President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the presidential race, Democrats are set to convene in Chicago for a significantly altered Democratic National Convention. The event will run from Monday through Thursday, with night-time activities including speeches occurring at the United Center in downtown Chicago, while daytime events will be held at McCormick Place, located approximately five miles from the city’s waterfront.

This year’s convention will see around 50,000 attendees, comprising 5,000 delegates and alternates, an equal number of media members, and various politicians and entertainers. The atmosphere is expected to be lively, but it will also include protests. Activists opposed to the ongoing conflict in Gaza are planning to rally at a nearby park just a block away from the United Center.

Preparations for the Democratic National Convention continue at the United Center, which will host evening activities.

While the podium will remain the same, the promotional signs and slogans will reflect the new leadership. Former U.S. Representative Adam Kinzinger, a Republican, is also scheduled to speak, showcasing the convention’s broad appeal.

Chicago tourism officials anticipate a substantial economic boost of about $150 million from hosting the convention, marking it as the twelfth time the city has welcomed the Democratic Party’s gathering. Residents should brace for road closures, heightened traffic, and security measures as the event unfolds.

Biden’s decision to step back from the race came after mounting pressure from notable party voices amid declining poll numbers against Republican nominee Donald Trump. As the nation’s oldest President at age 81, Biden made his announcement via social media, stating he would not seek a second term. Vice President Kamala Harris, at 69, will now lead the party with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who was selected as her running mate just over a week ago.

Instead of concluding the convention with a speech, Biden will kick off the event on Monday. He is expected to appear alongside his wife, Jill Biden, as well as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. This evening, themed “For the People,” will set the tone for the convention’s proceedings.

Harris is also slated to appear alongside Biden during Monday’s events, marking her first major convention appearance as the party’s nominee.

An organizer noted, “We felt it was important that people still be reminded that President Biden really set the foundation for this convention.” The intention is for Harris to shine, allowing her to tell her own story while being introduced by those who know her best. As reflected by the convention’s programming, this will be a significant moment for her, where she can define her narrative.

Throughout the week, attendees can look forward to speeches from two former presidents. Former President Barack Obama, along with former First Lady Michelle Obama, will speak on Tuesday, aligning with the night’s theme, “A Bold Vision for America’s Future.”

Former President Bill Clinton will follow suit on Wednesday, while Governor Walz is expected to deliver his acceptance speech, part of a night labeled “A Fight for Our Freedom.” On Thursday, Harris will formally accept the nomination for president during a night themed “For Our Future.”

This week’s convention will begin with a ceremonial roll call on Tuesday, a formality that Harris participated in earlier this month through a virtual event. The roll calls will start with Biden’s home state of Delaware and conclude with California and Minnesota.
