Big Sean, Destroy Lonely & More: New Releases This Week

As the holiday weekend draws near, the hip-hop scene is buzzing with fresh tracks to set the mood for the celebrations. This week marks significant releases: a Detroit rapper makes a major comeback, an artist under Playboi Carti’s Opium label drops his second album, and the first female rapper signed to Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) drops a new mixtape.

Big Sean has finally unveiled his much-anticipated sixth studio album, Better Me Than You, after a four-year break. Featuring collaborations with Cash Cobain, Kodak Black, Gunna, and others, the album has been on fans’ radars since Sean teased “Precision” back in March. While the single didn’t catch as much attention due to competing releases, Sean kept the momentum going with tracks like “Yes,” “Together Forever” featuring The Alchemist, and “On Up.”

Despite some setbacks, including alleged leaks and delays from its initial August 9 release date to August 30, Better Me Than You is finally here, showcasing Sean’s resilience and continued relevance in the hip-hop scene.

Parallel to Big Sean’s release, Destroy Lonely, an artist under Playboi Carti’s Opium label backed by Interscope Records, has dropped his highly awaited album Love Lasts Forever. Executive produced by Lil 88, the album includes 21 tracks, highlighting the popular single “Luv 4 Ya.” Ahead of its release, Lonely leveraged social media to keep fans in the loop, even creating the Instagram account @lovelastforever.us. He also treated fans to live performances of some album tracks during his appearance at Summer Smash in June. Initially slated for an April release, Love Lasts Forever saw delays as the final touches were meticulously applied.

In another corner of the hip-hop world, Doechii, the first female rapper signed to TDE, has finally delivered her mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal. The project gains inspiration from her Floridian roots and alligators, consisting of 19 tracks including fan-favorites “Nissan Altima” and “Boom Bap.” Doechii built anticipation with her Swamp Sessions freestyles posted over six weeks. She had first mentioned the mixtape around her birthday in early August, unveiling the artwork and release date on Instagram.

“Alligator Bites Never Heal 8/30,” she shared in her caption, adding, “Pre-save the mixtape, link in bio. Happy Birthday to me.” With this release, Doechii continues to cement her place in the ever-evolving hip-hop landscape.

This week is also packed with other significant hip-hop projects. Fans can tune into new releases from RZA, Curren$y, Juicy J, and more.
