Bill Simmons Criticizes Rival Sports Host for ‘Crazy Takes’

It’s been a while since Bill Simmons engaged in a public spat with a sports media rival, but he has returned to the fray.

In a recent episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast, while analyzing NFL win totals for the AFC, Simmons took aim at FS1 host Nick Wright. Specifically, he criticized Wright for his penchant for bold, unsubstantiated opinions aimed at garnering attention. Simmons made these remarks while arguing for the potential of C.J. Stroud and the Houston Texans to surpass Wright’s favored Kansas City Chiefs.

Defending his enthusiasm for the Texans this season, Simmons said:

“The case for Houston beating KC in the AFC title game or Round Two, whenever it happens, for me, because I was really trying to think, do I really believe this? I don’t want to do like the Nick Wright, I’m just throwing crazy takes out hoping to get aggregated … Sorry, Nick.”

Simmons continued by expressing his confidence in Houston’s regular-season performance and their potential home-field advantage over the Chiefs. However, the pointed criticism had already made its mark.

Perhaps Simmons viewed a recent clip from Wright’s show First Things First, where Wright predicted the Chicago Bears making it to the Super Bowl.

Such a pick was surprising, given its rarity in Chicago’s history and the NFL at large, especially involving rookie quarterbacks. Yet, Wright took over three minutes to explain his reasoning.

Wright is known for his assertive viewpoints and sometimes abrasive debate style. The idea that he fabricates his opinions for attention is a fresh accusation. Wright often claims he’s never wrong and that his method is to be thorough and persuasive enough that his cohosts and audience have no choice but to agree with him.

This usually involves a good amount of research, detailed explanations, and careful wording.

Nonetheless, it seems Simmons views FS1’s mainstay figure as excessively attention-seeking.
