Blake Lively may have had to settle for second place over the weekend behind her husband’s Deadpool & Wolverine. While It Ends With Us debuted to $50M in comparison to the MCU title’s third-frame dominance, she managed to take the lead on Monday and Tuesday.
The Sony/Wayfarer Studios romance drama, directed and starring Justin Baldoni, generated $6.2M on Monday and an estimated $7.6M on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Deadpool & Wolverine is on track to bring in around $7M on its third Tuesday.
The current total for the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel is $63.8M. Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine has surpassed the half-billion mark, reaching $506.7M. The Shawn Levy-directed, produced, and co-written film earned $5.85M on Monday alone.
Despite another strong hold for Deadpool & Wolverine in the $30M range expected this coming weekend, and with Disney/20th Century Studios’ Alien: Romulus potentially opening at $40M for the No. 1 spot, It Ends With Us is projected to have a robust hold in the -55% to -60% range, aiming for around $20M-$21M. Surpassing these expectations wouldn’t be shocking.
In terms of domestic opening weekends, It Ends With Us represents Lively’s second-best ever, trailing closely behind Green Lantern (2011), which she co-starred in with Reynolds and opened to $53.1M.
Lively is set to re-team with Paul Feig on Prime Video’s A Simple Favor 2. The first movie, starring Lively and Anna Kendrick, grossed nearly $100M worldwide. Feig revealed during Crew Call that he had a promising test screening for the sequel and hopes Prime Video, which has been leaning towards more theatrical releases, will give it a theatrical run. Given Lively’s current momentum and her massive social media following of over 50M, it’s hard to imagine the sequel not making it to theaters.
