ByteDance, TikTok invested more than $7 million in lobbying efforts and ad campaigns.

A TikTok spokesperson stated that their recent expenditure reflects efforts to educate policymakers on how legislation could impact their community of 170 million American users. The disclosures reveal that TikTok officials lobbied Congress and President Joe Biden’s executive office last quarter, including the National Security Council and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. The House passed legislation giving ByteDance nine months to divest the social media app or face a U.S. ban, with a similar bill passing in March. ByteDance paid lobbyist David Urban $80,000 to influence Congress on the March bill. TikTok has spent over $400,000 on outside lobbying firms in Washington since January 1.
