California Governor Gavin Newsom supports allowing Arizona doctors to provide abortions in California

Governor Gavin Newsom announced a proposal that would allow Arizona doctors to provide abortions to patients in California due to a near-total ban on abortions in Arizona. The proposal would only apply to licensed Arizona doctors and their patients until the end of November. California lawmakers and advocates supported the proposal, denouncing Arizona’s restrictive law. California already allows abortion up to fetal viability at around 24 weeks. Newsom has prioritized defending abortion access and has taken steps to ensure women have access to abortions in California, even offering financial assistance for travel expenses. The proposal has received criticism from Arizona Republican lawmakers, but Democratic Senator Eva Burch sees it as a step in the right direction. Newsom has also launched ads and campaigns to criticize attempts to restrict abortion access in other states.
