Captain of California Boat Sentenced to Jail for Fire that Took the Lives of 34 People

Jerry Boylan, the captain of a dive boat in California, has been sentenced to four years in jail for the deaths of 34 people in a fire on his vessel five years ago. He was convicted of “seaman’s manslaughter” for failing to have a night patrol or conduct fire drills as required by law. Boylan escaped along with four crew members, failing to help the 33 passengers who died. A request for a new trial was denied, and victims of the tragedy included members of a family celebrating a birthday. Boylan faced a maximum of 10 years in prison.
