Captain receives 4-year sentence for causing deaths of 34 aboard scuba boat in fiery accident

A federal judge in Los Angeles sentenced scuba dive boat captain Jerry Boylan to four years in prison and three years supervised release for criminal negligence after 34 people died in a fire on the Conception. Family members pleaded for the maximum 10-year sentence, sharing their grief in an emotional hearing. Boylan was found guilty of misconduct, and the blaze led to changes in maritime regulations. Although the cause of the fire remains undetermined, blame was placed on Boylan for failing to have proper safety measures in place. Attention now shifts to ongoing lawsuits filed by victims’ families.
