I Know What You Did Last Summer is set to make a comeback. Aiming for a summer 2025 release, The Hollywood Reporter has announced an impressive cast for the reboot. Leading roles are being negotiated with Madelyn Cline (of Outer Banks fame) and Camila Mendes (known for Riverdale). The original 1997 thriller by Sony Pictures starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Jennifer Love Hewitt. This time around, Tony Award nominee Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers (from Atlanta), and Jonah Hauer-King (of The Little Mermaid) are slated to join. Additionally, Hewitt and Prinze Jr. are reportedly in talks to reprise their iconic roles.

Ryan Phillippe, another star of the original film, is not yet confirmed for the reboot. Released on October 17, 1997, the original horror movie grossed over $72 million during its theatrical run. It followed a group of friends hunted by a hook-wielding villain after attempting to cover up hitting him with their car. The screenplay, written by Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson, was based on the 1973 novel of the same name by Lois Duncan.

Hewitt and Prinze came back for the 1998 sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, which also featured Brandy Norwood. 2006 saw the release of I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer with a completely new cast.

In a conversation with Entertainment Tonight, Hewitt addressed the possibility of returning for the 2025 installment. “I can’t confirm but I won’t deny, how about that?” she teased. She imagined that her character would be “a lot older but still kick ass” if she did return. “Here’s the truth, I don’t actually know what they have planned,” Hewitt commented when pressed further. She speculated that the new film would involve “lots of screaming and running around,” and humorously added, “hopefully the tops will be a little bigger than they were in the first movie.”
