The highly anticipated fourth and final premier MTG set of 2023, the Lost Caverns of Ixalan, made its grand debut at the tail end of the year. Returning to the beloved world of Ixalan, which first captured fans’ imaginations in 2017, this latest set brings back the adventurous themes that made the original so memorable. Despite the initial sets’ underwhelming performance in Standard and Draft formats, the Lost Caverns of Ixalan promises a treasure trove of excitement with its innovative mechanics and vibrant themes.
The digital realm of MTG Arena saw the Lost Caverns of Ixalan arrive on November 14, 2023, with the global physical release following closely on November 17, 2023. Prior to these dates, fans had the opportunity to dive into the action early during a week-long in-store pre-release event starting from November 10. The official spoiler season began even earlier, on October 24, giving enthusiasts a sneak peek at what the set had to offer.
As the spoiler season unfolded, several key features and cards stirred the community. Notably, the set introduced the ‘Descend’ mechanic, a clever nod to the original Ixalan’s ‘Ascend’ mechanic, adding a layer of strategic depth to gameplay. The ‘Discover’ mechanic, an enhanced version of the Cascade ability, also made its debut, allowing players to potentially cast spells for free or add them to their hand for later use.
Among the reprints, the Cavern of Souls stood out, reprinted directly into the main set rather than as a special or bonus issue. This inclusion was particularly significant as it promised to increase the availability of this powerful land card, potentially shaking up MTG Standard decks.
The narrative of Lost Caverns of Ixalan departs from the saga of The Immortal Sun, introducing new mysteries and challenges. The set explores underground settings, hinting at a journey to the center of the earth type of adventure. This thematic choice is intriguing, especially considering the inclusion of dinosaurs, which are traditionally not subterranean creatures. The set also hints at the presence of demons and other mythical beings, adding to the rich lore of the Ixalan plane.
Artwork and promotional materials released during MagicCon Barcelona further hinted at the vibrant underground ecosystems and mythical beings protecting magical cores, suggesting a dynamic and visually captivating set.
The Lost Caverns of Ixalan was available in various formats, including Draft Boosters, Set Boosters, and Collector Boosters, each offering a unique unboxing experience. The set also featured Commander decks, which are popular for multiplayer Magic games. Special editions like the Bundle: Gift Edition provided an extensive package, ideal for both new players and collectors.
Moreover, the set included exciting promotional items and box toppers, such as the Treasure Trove series, which featured reprints of popular cards with new art fitting the Ixalan theme. These collectibles not only enhanced the gameplay experience but also added value for collectors.
Following the release of Lost Caverns of Ixalan, the MTG community is already looking forward to what’s next. With sets like the MTG Lord of the Rings and others slated for release in the upcoming year, players and collectors have much to anticipate. Each new set not only brings fresh gameplay mechanics and stories but also contributes to the ever-evolving multiverse of Magic: The Gathering.
