China condemns US for sending warship through Taiwan Strait

China’s military criticized the passage of a U.S. destroyer through the Taiwan Strait, just before Taiwan’s new president takes office. The U.S. Navy conducted the routine transit in adherence to international law, emphasizing freedom of navigation. China often responds with accusations of “hyped” transits, reflecting their control claims. Military-to-military contact between the U.S. and China stalled in 2022 but resumed recently. Taiwan remains vigilant around sensitive dates, fearing Chinese intimidation. China views international navigation in the strait as a challenge to its sovereignty and regularly conducts military actions around Taiwan. The U.S. asserts its right to sail in the area despite China’s objections.
