Chinese Student Jailed in US for Threatening Pro-Democracy Schoolmate

A Chinese student in the US, Xiaolei Wu, has been sentenced to nine months in prison for stalking and threatening a female Chinese student who put up pro-democracy fliers on campus. The fliers at Berklee College of Music in Boston read: “We want freedom… We want democracy, we want to love, stand with Chinese people.” Wu threatened to “chop [the woman’s] hands off”, leading to his deportation order after serving his sentence. The FBI’s Boston Division described his actions as disturbing, as Wu communicated directly with his victim and made violent threats to instill fear to suppress First Amendment rights. Cyberstalking carries up to five years in prison in the US.
