City of Chicago removes ‘rat hole’ after sidewalk with animal impression is deemed damaged

A Chicago sidewalk landmark known as the “rat hole” was removed by city officials in the Roscoe Village neighborhood on the North Side. The section of sidewalk with an imprint resembling a rat had become famous, attracting visitors and complaints from neighbors. The Chicago Department of Transportation decided to replace the damaged sidewalk section, along with other parts in the area. After crews removed the slab, new concrete was poured. The Alderman’s office received numerous complaints about the uneven sidewalk and disturbances caused by people congregating there. The fate of the famous rat hole imprint remains undecided.
